Boedo Neighborhood. The area which now conforms Boedo, was originally filled with brick ovens, dairy farms, mills and some pulperías and grocery stores. Then, at the turn of the century, came cafés with tango shows…. even more tango and the presence of malevos [evil-doers] and poets. The most famous street corner, not just of the neighborhood, but perhaps of the city itself, is that of San Juan and Boedo. Homero Manzi immortalized this street corner in his tango Sur. Boedo Avenue got its name in 1882, as a tribute to Mariano Boedo, a brilliant lawyer from Salta, born on July 25, 1782. He dedicated his life to the cause of independence, carrying out important tasks which lead him to be the Vice-president of the Congreso de Tucumán [Tucumán Congress] where he swore allegiance to the Argentine Declaration of Independence.
